Busy Week Two for The Angels!

Versatile Freshman Maren Huss prepares to throw the Shot, 3/14/26

This week’s recap will be shorter than normal, as the coaching staff is getting ready for a quick turnaround this week at Tuesday’s DPS Relays…

Coming off their breakout performances in week one, the Angels had high hopes for the second week of competition, and did not disappoint. Wednesday brought our first JV Meet of the season, which we hosted at All City Stadium. The turnout from the City League was much bigger than expected, providing great competition in the modified meet schedule. Saturday was expected to be a dangerously windy day, but the luck came again in the form of sunshine and light/moderate afternoon winds at Echo Park Stadium during the ThunderRidge Invite.

The many incredible performances on Wednesday were highlighted by the Angel’s two event wins. Sophomore Kai Robinson won a thrilling high jump competition, where he bested a very good Hinkley jumper with a new PR of 5’8”. Freshman Cate Carhart made a move early to take the lead in a deep 800m field and ran away with the win, clocking a PR of 2:30. Some of the other standout performances from the Angels on Wednesday were Ainslie Mohr’s second place finish in the 1600m run and Jeremiah Knox’s performance in all three sprint events (100m, 200m, 4×100m).

Saturday brought the Angels PR’s in an incredible 62% of the events that they contested (34 of 55). The much anticipated Girls 4×800 (C. Kennedy, L. Carhart, Chomas, Johnson) made their 2026 debut with 3 of the 4 ladies having been on the 2025 squad that took 4th place in the 5A State Championships. They did not disappoint, running sub-10min (9:55.36) and placing 3rd. This was also good for the 3rd best time run so far this year in Colorado. The boys team of Wagner, Stasi, Gerber, and Bennett followed suit, scoring points with an 8th place finish in 9:01.72.

Jackson Llewellyn had a banner day in the sprints. The Senior doubled up on PR’s, an amazing accomplishment for an early season meet with swirling winds. Llewellyn dropped .22 seconds off his previous best in the 100m, running an 11.22 and showing much poise in dealing with the effects of an uncalled flinch that occurred in the lane next to his before the gun went off. A few hours later, he shaved a massive .8 seconds off his lifetime best in the 200m, dominating his heat with a time of 22.43. This was good for a 4th place finish in the meet. Keep an eye on this guy as he continues to refine his speed and execution, as it will likely lead to Jefferson County Stadium this May…

Mary Clare Nussbaum nonchalantly showed up prior to the 1600 and proceeded to drop a 5:22.51 personal best over the 4-lap race and claim a 5th place finish in a stacked field. She has turned heads every time she’s stepped on the track this year, and is quickly becoming a major storyline for this 2026 Angel squad.

All six Angels in the 400m Dash dropped new lifetime bests. The Kennedy twins (Lenore and Corrine) battled it out in heat 6 with Lenore taking the lead throughout much of the race and Corrine using her endurance as a distance runner in stealing it back just before the finish line. They ran 1:03.54 and 1:04.29, with Freshman Maren Huss dropping a 1:05.29 in her first ever 400m. The boys impressed similarly with Senior Kingston Viswanath leading the way in 53.87, and Freshman Jeremiah Knox showing his first of what are sure to be many great performances in the event, fearlessly running a 54.49.

Junior standout Avery Johnson ran her second 800m of the day and showed her early season fitness and race acumen with her strong 4th place finish, running 2:25.91 in the crazy crosswinds which seemed to be coming from every direction. The previous heat provided more sibling excitement as the Carhart sisters battled it out for 2 laps, with Lola edging out her younger sister Cate by about 3 seconds.

Sophomore Fiona Jeong led the wave of Angel PR’s in the girls 3200m. These ladies showed amazing fitness and race craft in battling the wind to do so. Jeong went 12:23.86 for the 9th place finish, while fellow Sophomore Lila Brown was close behind in 12:40.22 and Freshman Norah Dysart coming on strong in the final lap to clock 12:45.89. This crew of young two-milers are legit!

Over in the jumps, Kai Robinson decided a single PR for the week in the High Jump wasn’t enough, clearing 5’9” and placing 10th. Sophomore Alex Klug dropped a major PR in the Boys Long Jump, soaring 20’1” and taking a 5th place finish, all without using any of his additional jumps that he earned in making it to finals (we left before they started!).

The Athletes of the Week were Mary Clare Nussbaum and Jeremiah Knox
