Angels Impress at League Relays and Broomfield Shootout

Broomfield Shootout- 3/21/26

Girls 4×800 of Brown, Ochoa, Nussbaum & Jeong celebrate their 4th place finish, 3/21/26

Temperatures climbed above 90 degrees on Saturday as nearly 50 of the best track & field programs in Colorado converged on Broomfield High School for the 19th Annual Broomfield Shootout. This meet has historically served as an early season gauge on which teams and athletes are the ones to watch during that particular season, and this year was no different. East showed up determined to stake their claim in the 2026 5A landscape, and they did just that.

Of the 43 events entered for the Angels, 29 Personal Bests were had, or nearly 70% of the performances. Five of these PR’s were also new All-Time Top-10 marks for East HS, bringing the season total to 12 Top-10 marks!

Senior Scout Chomas started the morning off with a 10 second PR in the 3200m, running 11:36.50. That placed her 3rd in East History in this event, and was the breakout performance Chomas was ready for as she truly begins her Senior campaign. She will now set her sights on a 1600m tune-up next week in Niwot before heading to Hayward Field for the Oregon Relays the first week of April.

The other four top-10 marks claimed were in the 110m Hurdles, 1600m run, Long Jump, and High Jump. Running a .7 second PR, and (as of this writing) the #3 time in Colorado, Senior Mulyndwa (Moe) Kafuuma dropped a 14.55 in the 110m Hurdles. Fresh off his trip to the New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York, Moe was excited to get back outside and stretch his legs over 110 meters. This time places him #7 on the East all-time list, and will also cement his right to go over the 39" barriers at Jeffco Stadium this May in the State Championships.

Anaz Bryan in the aftermath of competing in 3 events in 90 degree heat, 3/21/26

Senior Anaz Bryan continued to acquaint himself with track as he simultaneously competed in three different events (LJ/HJ/4×100m), and set the #5 all-time mark in the long jump, soaring 20’11.5”.

Fellow newcomer and frequent meet recap mentionee, Junior Lenore Kennedy matched her PR from earlier in the week in the high jump, going 4’10”, which places her name in the #5 all-time spot.

Junior Avery Johnson, who continually proves to be a star in every event she is placed in, got to run the 1600m for the first time this season, and reeled off jaw-dropping splits in the final 600m to run a regular season PR of 5:16.63. This placed her 6th in this stacked meet, and 5th in East history. Watching this kid run healthy and display her fiery competitiveness has been a major highlight for the coaching staff so far this season.

Getting a late start on her season due to the fact that she was leading the Angels Basketball team to a Final Four appearance, Junior Grace Hall couldn’t wait to lace up her springy new Maxfly’s and test her fitness on the track. Coming into the season ranked #10 in East history in the 400m, everyone involved was anxious to see her run. Hall was frustrated with the coaches for entering her in a time that was a few seconds slower than her PR, and took it upon herself to resoundingly prove them wrong. Given the instructions to get out hard in the first 200m and be unafraid of the consequences of doing so in the back half of the race, Hall came through the first 200m in 26 seconds and placed herself in a position to either run an incredible time or stagger across the finish line. Hall did the former, showing her unmatched toughness and putting major distance on the rest of her heat to run a new personal best and #8 all-time mark of 58.87 seconds, and placed 3rd overall in the event.

The Angels showed out in the boys 4×100, besting the 2-time defending state champions from Eaglecrest, and running the #2 time in 5A (42.87). Bryan, Viswanath, Llewellyn, and Kafuuma showed that the Angels have State Championship ambitions, and provided much excitement to Coach Carhart in his favorite event.

In what was probably everyone’s favorite event of the day, Senior Tyjuan McKnight flew down the straightaway for the win in the Unified 100m Dash, in a PR time of 16.40!

League Relays- 3/17/26

Wanting to come together and enjoy an afternoon competing together, the Angels headed to All City Stadium Tuesday afternoon to give the rest of the City League a preview of what they were up against with this revamped Angel squad in 2026. East was on a mission for first place finishes in the meet, and seized 15 of them out of the 33 events contested, including 13 of the 21 events on the track. It was a dominant showing by the Angels. The girls brought home the meet championship trophy and boys took 2nd overall. When the story of this season is written, this night will likely be referenced as the one where the Angels truly became a Team.

The Athletes of the week were Grace Hall, Paola Ochoa, Kingston Viswanath, and Anaz Bryan.
