Dr. Dave Scudamore
DISTANCE
Coach Dave Scudamore is a lifelong runner, educator, and mentor whose athletic and professional journey reflects a deep commitment to excellence and growth. Coach Scudamore had a remarkable career as an athlete. In high school, he earned All-American honors three times—twice in cross country (1986, 1987) and once in track and field (1988), where he was ranked fourth nationally in the 3000m, 3200m, and two-mile events. While attending Stanford University, he continued to excel, earning NCAA Division I All-American recognition in the 10,000m in both 1992 and 1993. On the national and international stage, Coach Scudamore represented the United States as a four-time USA National Team member, winning the 1997 USA Marathon Championship and finishing 13th in the Marathon at the 1997 World Championships in Athens, Greece. He also placed sixth at the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon.
Beyond his personal achievements, Coach Scudamore has been an integral part of the Denver East High School running community since 2014, beginning as a parent volunteer before stepping into assistant coaching roles for both cross country and track and field. His passion for supporting young athletes is matched by his professional dedication to medicine and education. A Stanford University graduate with degrees in History and Biology, he went on to earn his MD from the University of California at Davis School of Medicine in 2000. He completed his pediatric training at the Children’s Hospital of Oakland, serving as Chief Resident in 2003–2004, and now serves at the University of Colorado School of Medicine as an Associate Professor of Clinical Practice, Director of Clinical Operations for Pediatric Hospital Medicine, and Interim Section Head for Pediatric Hospital Medicine. He is board certified in both Pediatrics and Pediatric Hospital Medicine.
Coach Scudamore is married to Dr. Jennifer Reich, Professor of Sociology at the University of Colorado Denver, and together they have three children: Harrison (Denver East Class of 2018, Columbia University runner), Lilia (Denver East Class of 2021, BA/MA from McGill University), and Jonas (Denver East Class of 2025, running for CSU). For Coach Scudamore, helping young people discover the joy of running and learn about themselves in the process is his true “happy place.” He jokes that he really has no other hobbies—and for those who know him, that devotion to running and mentoring speaks volumes.
