dR. sTEVEN aTCHLEY
MIDDLE DISTANCE
Coach Atchley is joining the coaching staff at East High School for the upcoming 2025-26 track season and has known and coached with Coach Carhart for many years. His running experience includes being the Texas State Private School champion in the 880-yard run (yes, he's that old) in 1972. He went on to run the 800 and 1600 meters at the University of Oklahoma from 1972 to 1976, and he had the pleasure of competing at the Kansas and Texas Relays during his college career. He has coached distance at Rangeview High School in Aurora from 2021 to 2025, during which he coached multiple state-qualifying 4x800 relay teams. In 2025, he coached Kimi Bulto to an 800 time of 1:52, and Kimi received a scholarship to CU Boulder. He also coached Abdi Husaan to times of 4:12 in the 1500 and 4:14 in the mile, which made Abdi the fastest high school freshman runner in the US at those distances. Coach Atchley continues to coach younger runners at Aurora Quest Middle School, where he coached Lola and Cate Carhart to first-place finishes in the 800 and 1600 meters during their 8th-grade years. Both girls now run at Denver East, and he hopes to help them and their teammates continue their success. His Quest runners frequently win the city championships in the 800 and 1600.
Dr. Atchley is a semi-retired cardiologist who has practiced at St. Joseph's Hospital for the last 35 years. He continues to teach cardiology to the interns and residents at St. Joseph's. Those skills translate to the track through his desire to teach young men and women the value of hard work, dedication to a goal, and teamwork. He emphasizes how those traits will pay dividends as they face life after high school. He also works in the Spiritual Care department at St. Joseph's.
Dr Atchley served in the US Army from 1976 to 1990, during which he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in 1989 and later received a Veteran's Quilt of Valor. He tries to teach the value of being prepared for the challenges that arise, a skill he learned during his service.
Besides medicine and coaching track, his other love is being a cowboy on the 105 year old family ranch in Texas.
